THERE IS NO SUGAR SHORTAGE

Support from Florida Sugarcane Farmers

It is a fact that Florida’s sugarcane farmers have consistently supported the construction of a reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee, which is a part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). Farmers in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA), where sugarcane is primarily grown, have always been 100 percent committed to the completion of CERP (and Central Everglades Planning Projects, known as CEPP) projects, which includes the EAA Reservoir on the A-1 and A-2 parcels.

While farmers in the EAA support the project, in 2017, they joined the Florida Legislature in objecting to the unnecessary taking of additional farmland out of production since the property necessary to build the reservoir was already acquired in 1999 by the state.
